Title	Idaho State Historical Museum Chinese Remedies and Herbs shop replica
Description	An exhibit at the Idaho State Historical Museum featuring a Chinese remedies and herbs shop run by Gerald H. Ah Fong, son of C.K. Ah Fong. Unfamiliar with western medicine, early Chinese immigrants relied on traditional Chinese remedies. At an herb shop customers purchased medicine to treat a variety of ailments. Prescriptions were required and were given by a trained herb doctor, who was often affiliated with the store. Some prescriptions used as many as fifteen different herbs, barks, gums, nuts, flowers, insects, and different parts of mammals, birds, and reptiles. A well stocked shop could have more than 3000 items. C.K. Ah Fong was the only traditional Chinese herb doctor in Idaho to be licensed as a physician or surgeon. He had a substantial non-Chinese clientele in the Boise area. His son Gerald continued in the business after C.K. died.

Format	Original photographs were taken with a Nikon D1X camera as 300 dpi TIFF files. The images were then converted into 72 dpi JPEG files through PhotoShop 6.0 and added to the CONTENT database at the WSU Libraries.
