Description	This illustration consists of two drawings, one of the McAlister ranch and one of their home, with an inset portrait. D. A. McAllister was one of the first horse-breeders in Eastern Oregon. He came to the Northwest in 1862, working as a drover for his uncle, Henry McAlister. In 1867 he purchased stock and began ranching on his own. His 680 acre ranch was considered one of the finest in the Grande Ronde, situated three miles east of La Grande, Oregon.

Format	Original drawings and engravings were scanned in color at 600 dpi on a Microtek 9600XL scanner and saved as TIFF files. The TIFF files were converted into the MrSID format at a compression ratio of 12 to 1 using LizardTech's Geospatial Encoder 1.4 software. In 2002, graduate students at the University of Washington's Infomation School described and uploaded these MrSid files to CONTENTdm database at the Washington State University Libraries.
