Excavating in bedrock west of block 40. Steel piling in section "D" of west cofferdam to the right.
Photograph shows a multitude of workers involved in excavation activities behind the timber crib and the west cofferdam. Excavation activities continued behind a protective steel piling structure that boxed in the men and made mechanized concrete placement difficult. The concentration of men needed for manual concrete placement and excavation activities slowed the project, till a sufficient height of concrete was reached to remove the obstructive timber cribs to commence with mechanized concrete pouring.
