Fifty-six
years
ago
in
October
,
Mrs
.
Davidson
left
her
home
in
Mason
county
,
Missouri
, for
Washington
Territory
. She
arrived
in
Walla
Walla
the
26th
of
October
,
1880
. She
traveled
by
way
of
San
Francisco.
. The
boat
had
already
pulled
out
for
Portland
the
day
she
landed
there. She then had to
stay
in
San
Francisco
for
four
days
. Then
took
the
boat
to
Portland
.
Stayed
there
one
night
then
took
the
boat
the
following
morning
and
rode
on the
boat
for
several
miles
when
she was
transferred
from the
boat
to the
train
which
they
travelled
on for
several
miles
. She was then
transferred
to the
boat
. They
continued
to
ride
on the
boat
to The
Dalles
.
Mrs
.
Davidson
was
accompanied
on this
trip
by a
friend
Mrs
.
Brewer
. At The
Dalles
they were
transferred
to the
train
. They
rode
on the
train
to
Walla
Walla
,
which
was the
Dr
.
Baker
narrow
guage
railroad
.
While
they were
standing
waiting
for their
baggage
to be
transferred
they
kept
stepping
back
in the
depot
to
keep
out
of the
way
when
the
depot
agent
stepped
up
to them and
asked
them not to
step
back
too
far
or they would
step
on a
dead
man
lying
on the
floor
covered
up
with a
sheet
. The
agent
stated
he was
getting
off
the
boat
the
day
before
and
fell
in the
river
and was
drowned
.
