Pizarro's
exploratory
expeditions
down
the
western
coast
of
South
America
were
initially
less
than
successful
, and
reports
say
the
men
on his
ships
were
dying
at
rates
as
high
as
two
per
day
.
Faced
with these
deaths
, the
governor
of
Panama
ordered
the
expeditions
halted
.
Reportedly
,
Pizarro
drew
a
line
on the
ground
and
asked
that those
who
desired
wealth
and
glory
should
cross
it
and
join
him.
Thirteen
did
, and the
remainder
of the
men
returned
to
Panama
.
Pizarro
and the
thirteen
sailed
south
, and
made
the
first
European
discovery
of
Peru
.
